The Lagos State Government has introduced new safety regulations requiring all ride-sharing vehicles to undergo compulsory roadworthiness inspections. This directive, announced by Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi, applies to major platforms such as Uber, Bolt, Lagride, and InDrive, and is aimed at improving passenger safety, service quality, and compliance in the city’s rapidly growing e-hailing sector.
The move follows reports that some vehicles operating under ride-hailing services have deteriorated to unsafe conditions, undermining the high standards these services were meant to introduce. Under the new policy, all vehicles will be inspected for mechanical fitness, appearance, and safety features. Any vehicle failing the inspection will be barred from operating until it is brought up to standard.
In addition, only cars officially registered with the Lagos State Government will be allowed to operate, and all drivers must hold valid certification from the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI). The government is also urging passengers to book rides exclusively through verified platforms to ensure traceability and accountability.
Enforcement will be handled by agencies including the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Penalties for non-compliance are strict, starting with license queries and escalating to suspensions, fines, and possible license revocation for repeat offenders. Fines for drivers begin at ₦20,000 for a first offense, with heavier penalties for persistent violations.
By implementing this initiative, Lagos aims to modernize its urban transport sector, protect commuters, and uphold service quality in the face of increasing demand. The plan underscores the city’s broader commitment to regulating emerging transport innovations while ensuring that public safety remains a top priority.
