Dangote Petroleum Refinery has taken delivery of 4,000 new compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to revolutionize fuel distribution nationwide. This significant investment—costing around N720bn—will enable the direct supply of refined petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel to filling stations, industrial plants, and other bulk consumers, bypassing many traditional middlemen and distribution bottlenecks. The trucks, which are about 40% more cost-efficient than traditional diesel tankers, will start operating on August 15, 2025.
Dangote’s refinery, already running at 85% of its 650,000 barrels-per-day capacity, aims to reduce operational costs, lower carbon emissions, and improve delivery efficiency. The initiative also plans to establish CNG filling stations nationwide, aligning with Nigeria’s goals for cleaner energy and logistics modernization. By supporting improved supply reliability and reducing logistics expenses, the rollout could stabilize pump prices in Nigeria and create numerous jobs. However, some industry groups have voiced concerns about potential job losses among tanker drivers and increased market dominance by Dangote.
